Itinerary

Sat, Jul 4 to Tue, Jul 14, 2026

Your vacation is about to begin! Spend your first night aloft and arrive ready for an unforgettable trip.

A Country Walkers representative will greet you at the airport to start your adventure off right. A complimentary car service will whisk you to your centrally located hotel. From here, you are perfectly positioned to explore this charming city at your leisure.

Mt. Esja; 2-3 miles, easy to moderate

After an included breakfast at your hotel, meet your trip leaders at 9:00 a.m. in the lobby with your luggage. They’ll be wearing Country Walkers shirts for easy identification. Please be dressed for hiking and bring a swimsuit if you’d like to enjoy the nature baths and hot springs later today. Towels and wading shoes will be provided.

After brief introductions, your group will travel approximately 30 minutes north of Reykjavík to begin your first hike, a trail on Mt. Esja. This easy forest path slopes upward through fields of colorful wildflowers and shrubs, offering expansive views of lush valleys and soaring mountain peaks in the distance.

Afterward, unwind at the nearby Hvammsvík nature baths and hot springs, a beloved retreat where you can soak and relax in a pristine setting. Enjoy a lunch of local soup at their cozy bistro.

Later this afternoon, board your Windstar yacht—a small, all-suite ship that will serve as your home throughout the journey. Settle into your cabin, explore the ship’s amenities, and join your fellow walkers for a private welcome reception and dinner in the elegant onboard restaurant. You set sail tonight.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

3.5-5 miles, moderate

Late this morning, your ship arrives at Heimaey, the largest of the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar), just off Iceland’s southwestern coast. The cliffs and grassy fields atop its promontory provide nesting grounds for more than a dozen bird species, including kittiwakes, snipe, guillemots, the great skua, various gulls, and graceful Arctic terns. But its most popular resident is only here part-time: during summer months, millions of puffins nest here and fish off the shores. Set out on a walk up the slopes of Helgafell, the volcanic cone that formed this stunningly scenic island some 5,000 years ago.

Return to the ship for lunch—or sample one of the local restaurants at your own expense. Then explore the starkly beautiful island of Heimaey on your own. Visit the beluga whales at the Sea Life Trust, the Eldheimar Volcanic Museum, the historic Stafkirkjan stave church, or the interactive Sagnheimar Folk Museum. Or enjoy a tour and tasting at Brothers Brewery.

Conditions permitting, your trip leader may also offer an optional guided hike to the island’s other volcano, Eldfell.

Please note: Landings at Heimaey Island are weather-dependent. If weather or sea conditions prevent a visit, an alternative plan will be communicated onboard. This may involve more time in Reykjavík, additional time at sea, or an earlier arrival in Seyðisfjörður.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

1 mile, easy

You spend most of today sailing along the coast. Join your leaders for lunch on board, where you’ll gain insight into local Icelandic culture. By late afternoon, you arrive in Seyðisfjörður—Iceland’s most picturesque coastal town—nestled in an 11-mile-long, calm, deep fjord lined with snowcapped mountains and cascading waterfalls. The modern Icelandic poet Matthías Johannessen once called it a “pearl enclosed in a shell.”

The town’s streets are lined with colorful wood kit homes—some of Iceland’s best-preserved wooden buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Remarkably, many were imported from Norway by wealthy merchants and whalers. With a thriving arts scene, Seyðisfjörður also serves as a port to mainland Europe, with the Smyril Line car ferry sailing weekly to Norway, the Shetland and Faroe Islands, and Denmark.

Enjoy an easy walk through town, passing these charming homes as you make your way to the Blue Church, known for its mesmerizing glacier-blue hue. The church was moved or rebuilt several times before finding its current home in 1922. Follow the vibrantly colored Rainbow Street to its door, then step inside for a performance by local musicians and storytellers.

After dinner—either on board or on your own in town—take a late-evening stroll to the lively Skaftfell Cultural Center and Café, a grand old house and gallery where artists and musicians gather. With the late-setting sun, you might also venture to Kaffi Lára, a popular local pub known for its El Grillo beer, named after a British tanker sunk in Seyðisfjörður by German bombers in 1944. Alternatively, walk 15 minutes to the Tvísöngur Sound Sculpture, an outdoor installation by German artist Lukas Kühne. This captivating piece comprises five interconnected, igloo-like domes, each one transforming your voice into a tone of traditional Icelandic harmony.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

3-4 miles, easy to moderate

After breakfast on board, head out with your leaders for a day of spectacular hiking amid the rugged beauty of East Iceland. The trails winding through Seyðisfjörður’s protected nature preserves lead into a pristine wilderness of dramatic rock formations, soaring peaks, peaceful meadows, and cascading waterfalls. Each step brings sweeping vistas, abundant birdlife, and crisp, clean air rising from rushing streams and descending from rocky slopes. During this memorable walk, you may spot Arctic terns, black-tailed godwits, golden plovers, or eider ducks in flight or wading in the shallows.

At the end of the hike, return to the yacht for a well-earned lunch. Enjoy the ship’s amenities this afternoon—perhaps relaxing in the sauna or hot tub. This evening, gather with your fellow travelers for dinner.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Goðafoss; 1 mile, easy. Grjótagjá to Hverfjall Crater to Dimmuborgir; 2.5-4 miles, easy to moderate with difficult sections

From your next port in Akureyri, travel east to serene Lake Mývatn in the geologically active Krafla region. Among its volcanic craters, lava fields, and bubbling mudflats, you’ll find Europe’s largest migratory bird sanctuary, where many species of waterfowl feed on the insects and algae of the lake’s warm, shallow waters.

En route, you’ll stop at Goðafoss, the “Waterfall of the Gods.” This cascade was named for the lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði, who made Christianity the official religion of Iceland. So devoted was Þorgeir that after his conversion, he threw his statues of Norse gods into the waterfall. After a short walk around the falls, continue to the Storagjá and Grjótagjá fault fissures, both once used for bathing.

From Grjótagjá, proceed through sandy plains and lava formations up the northern side of Hverfjall, a classic tuff ring volcano. This near-symmetrical crater appeared 2,500 years ago in a cataclysmic eruption. Rising to 1,520 feet and stretching 3,400 feet across, it is a massive and awe-inspiring landmark in Mývatn.

Your trail circles along the western edge of the crater, from where stunning views open up. Avid walkers can join an optional hike (with difficult sections) down the southern side of the crater into the giant lava field at Dimmuborgir (literally “Dark Castles”). Its strange lava pillars were created about 2,000 years ago when lava flowed across older lava fields and was dammed into a fiery lake. The surface cooled, but when the dam broke, the remaining lava flowed onward, leaving behind the cooled pillars. Alternatively, you may catch a shuttle down to Dimmuborgir and stroll among its curious formations.

Today’s lunch includes a taste of the Mývatn specialty—hot spring bread baked in the geothermal heat of a local underground bakery. Afterward, return to Akureyri, the “Capital of the North,” where you’ll have time to explore. With the long daylight hours, you might stroll through the Akureyri Botanical Garden or visit one of the town’s many art galleries. Or visit the Forest Lagoon, a serene thermal spa in the nearby Vaðlaskógur forest—your leaders can help arrange a visit at your own expense.

Dinner tonight is on board at your leisure.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

1 mile, easy

After a morning of scenic sailing and lunch on your own, arrive in Ísafjörður, set at the foot of the stunning flat mountain range known to locals as the Troll’s Throne. Nestled in the deep bowl of its namesake fjord, this charming town was founded by the Norse in the 9th century and is the largest settlement on the Westfjords Peninsula. Like so much of Iceland, it was built on the fishing industry, to which the Westfjords Heritage Museum pays tribute.

Today you might choose to take advantage of your included shipboard credit to join an enlightening excursion. Perhaps explore the fjord by kayak, take an ATV for a thrilling ride along the fjord’s edge, or venture out in an inflatable RIB craft for some spectacular whale-watching. Windstar’s onboard concierge will be available to provide excursion options and availability. Alternatively, visit a nearby Icelandic horse farm (at your own expense, with assistance from your trip leader). The small yet sure-footed breed was brought to the island by Norse settlers more than a millennium ago and is prized for its petite size, thick coat, flowing mane, and unique gait. You’ll learn about its rare equine qualities and have the chance to hop in the saddle for a ride.

For those who prefer to walk, join your leaders for an informative and relaxed tour of Ísafjörður town. Its oldest district uniquely occupies a spit of sand that stretches into the fjord’s waters. Or head out for an optional moderate hike into the mountains, which offer sweeping views of the town and the blue waters that reach toward it like an apron from the sea.

This evening, walk into town with your trip leaders for a special dinner featuring some of the freshest fish you’ll ever taste.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Saxhólar; 2 miles, easy-moderate. Arnarstapi to Hellnar; 1.5 miles, easy

After a delicious breakfast on board, set out from your port of Grundarfjörður for a full day’s exploration of the unspoiled Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This is home to Snæfellsjökull, the glacier-capped volcano that Jules Verne imagined as the gateway in Journey to the Center of the Earth. You begin your day at the westernmost tip of the peninsula, ascending well-worn pathways and steps up to the Saxhóll Crater. Your short walk is rewarded with magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean and dramatic lava fields.

Next, continue to Arnarstapi to witness where flowing, fiery lava once met the sea, forming the Hellnahraun field and striking coastal rock formations. After a breathtaking coastal walk amid this cherished nature preserve, pause for lunch at a delightful family-owned café with incredible cliffside views. Fish soup, homemade waffles, and skyr cake are just a few of the traditional dishes on the menu.

Later, enjoy a scenic hike to the spectacular Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall. These tranquil cascades are among Iceland’s most photographed, largely thanks to their position beneath the iconic Kirkjufell mountain. This conical peak is Iceland’s most visually distinctive, its striations marking the retreat of a massive glacier over millennia.

This evening, gather on board for a memorable farewell dinner, raising a heartfelt toast to the wonders of Iceland.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Country Walkers Air Package Guests:
Your tour concludes after breakfast on board. After disembarking your yacht, your Country Walkers leader will escort you—luggage in tow—on a short five-minute walk to your post-tour hotel in Reykjavík, the Radisson Blu 1919. Official check-in time is 3:00 p.m.; if your room is not yet ready, you may store your luggage with reception.

You have the remainder of the day free to explore Reykjavík at your own pace—perhaps browse the boutiques of Laugavegur, visit the iconic Hallgrímskirkja Church, or unwind in one of the city’s thermal pools. For lunch and dinner, consider sampling traditional Icelandic fare at one of Reykjavík’s many acclaimed restaurants.

Country Walkers Post-Tour Extension Guests:
After breakfast on board, you forego your additional night in Reykjavík and travel approximately 45 minutes to Keflavík International Airport for your included flight to Vágar Airport in the Faroe Islands. A Country Walkers representative will meet you just outside the arrivals area.

Located halfway between Iceland and Scotland, the Faroes are heart-stoppingly wild and beautiful. This archipelago of 22 islands has been sculpted over millennia into a breathtaking landscape of soaring craggy mountains, deep fjords, rolling green grasslands, and sweeping valleys—all towering over traditional fishing towns rich in Viking heritage.

From the airport on the island of Vágar, travel to the tiny village of Bøur, a scenic cluster of coastal homes anchored by a charming church. Here, pause to take in the dramatic seascape views of Tindhólmur and Drangarnir—imposing rocky islets that rise sheer from the water, a powerful preview of the natural beauty yet to come.

Continue to the remote village of Gásadalur, perched on a cliff beneath the island’s tallest peak, Árnafjall. From this secluded hamlet, take a short walk to Múlafossur Waterfall, one of the Faroe Islands’ most iconic sites. Its name—“Promontory Waterfall”—reflects its dramatic 100-foot plunge directly into the sea. After time to take in the view, enjoy a special lunch back in the village as honored guests.

This afternoon, travel to Miðvágur, nestled between sloping grasslands and a tranquil bay. From here, hike an easy four miles (roundtrip) to Lake Leitisvatn—also called the “Lake Above the Ocean” or the “Floating Lake.” Set atop seaside cliffs, its waters create the powerful illusion that the lake hovers above the crashing Atlantic below.

After a remarkable first day, continue on to your hotel in Tórshavn, the charming capital of the Faroe Islands, located on the island of Streymoy. This evening, celebrate your arrival with a festive welcome dinner featuring local specialties.

After breakfast, join your local guide and travel by ferry to the island of Skúvoy, named for its abundance of great skua birds. The island is also home to common guillemots and Atlantic puffins, many of which nest on seaside cliffs that rise more than 1,300 feet above the churning Atlantic. Fewer than 20 people live on Skúvoy, and one of them has graciously granted us access to his land so you can experience the island’s vast, sweeping beauty. Your walk covers approximately 3.5 miles and leads to a breathtaking outlook known for its rich birdlife.

Afterward, continue to the tiny village, where a local host has prepared a farm-fresh lunch for you. You’ll have free time back in Tórshavn to relax at your hotel and enjoy dinner on your own. If you prefer to stay in, your hotel’s restaurant is one of the best in town. Or take a short walk to a nearby brewery, where you might catch some live music.

2 Continue Your Post-Tour Extension

Start today with a 3.5-mile guided hike through more stunning Faroese landscapes and seascapes to Kirkjubøur, the islands’ most important historic village and former center of cultural and religious life. Along the way, pass Reynsmúlalág, a natural amphitheater that served as a gathering place where speakers addressed local issues as recently as 1895–1940. There’ll be time to pause and take in this remarkable site.

At Kirkjubøur, explore the remains of the ancient Magnus Cathedral, built around 1300, and the still-intact 12th-century St. Olav Church—the only medieval church in the Faroe Islands still in use. Most remarkable of all is the modest farmhouse built of wood in the 11th century—despite the islands having virtually no trees. Still inhabited by its owner and caretaker, it is one of the oldest continuously occupied wooden houses in the world.

Back in Tórshavn, join your guide for a brief walking tour of the town. Stroll through the atmospheric old quarter on the Tinganes Peninsula, explore the narrow lanes of Reyn with its sod-roofed wooden houses, and take in the lively fish market and cafés of Vágsbotnur. At the tip of the peninsula sits the Faroese parliament building—first used by rulers in 825, making it one of the oldest parliamentary sites in the world.

Following your tour, enjoy free time to further explore Tórshavn at your own pace. After lunch on your own, enjoy a relaxing afternoon before gathering this evening for a special dinner at the home of a local farmer.
